Fate/stay night - All Routes
This is the general thread for Fate/stay night, meant for those who have played the entire game and wish to discuss it as a whole. Spoiler tags are not required.
Fate/stay night (フェイト/ステイナイト, Feito/sutei naito) is a Japanese eroge visual novel game created by TYPE-MOON, which was originally released on January 30, 2004. It is Type-Moon's first commercial work, following their transition from a doujin soft visual novel group. Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel are the three branching storylines found within the game. Each diverge at certain points, and, depending upon player interaction, will end in one of several possible ways. The Fate scenario features Saber as the main heroine. In Unlimited Blade Works, Tohsaka Rin is the main female lead and Heaven's Feel expands on the history of Matou Sakura.

Sandalphon's worst nightmare
Well, lets get started.
Shirou in the heaven's feel route was pretty much the hero he ever dreamed to become, with the only difference that he was the hero of a single person, for whom he vowed to give his life for, while wanting to stay alive just to be able to live by that person's side.
That is what makes this Shirou the best in my opinion, because he actually finds something that makes him feel worthy staying alive after the end.

Yeah.
Shirou in HF is just as much of a hero as Shirou in every other route, if not more so. He's just Sakura's hero. Hell, he even kills himself to protect her.

I love Fate/stay night as a complete and whole story. I view Fate as the beginning, UBW as the middle, and HF as the end, despite being separate routes. And I like all routes and heroines pretty much equally, with Saber only slightly below Rin and Sakura in terms of my own personal preference, but equal in the story.
That's right. I don't pick one route/girl and forsake all others. I am the exact opposite of the general Type-Moon fanbase! COME AT ME!
[the above is true, but also lovingly in jest... don't really come at me]

Sandalphon's worst nightmare
Literally. Using magic past his body's limits is something he did in every route, but in this one he was warned by Kotomine in a way that would make anyone avoid using magic ever again, and he still does it trying to project stuff in hopes that it will help Sakura. He even hides the fact he took the shroud off to prevent Sakura's (and Rin's) grief.

Yeah, but it's Sakura, so few people actually get that, and jump to the conclusion of "Sakura's a bitch, Shirou's 2 gud for her".

Well, the problem is that Nasu kind of forces you to do that (unless you happen to be a Rin fan, anyway...) by making the first two routes horrible for Sakura and the final route horrible for Saber.

Heaven's Feel is just so badass because it's all about Shirou tearing stuff down to achieve his goals, instead of hiding behind his harem and relying on them.
Killing Berserker like a boss? Check.
Killing Sabre like a boss? Check.
Save Rider from Excaliblast like a boss? Check.
Blowing up True Grail like a boss? Check.Kotomine pwn'ing Hassan like a boss? Bonus check.
Y'all who don't like Heaven's Feel are simply haters.

Isn't it sad, Saku-wait, no it isn't, as at least she gets some time in hot doujins, Sacchin can't even say that.
EDIT:
Shirou sure got his Heaven's Feel alright ;DY'all who don't like Heaven's Feel are simply haters.

Indeed.
In one of the Tiger Dojos is is even asked if there's not a good ending for Saber in this route, and chibi Rin just says "If you want a happy ending for Saber, play the Fate route", or something like that.
This is a route which proves that not everyone can be saved, and to save someone, another person needs to be left behind instead.
Shirou actually kills Saber so he can save Sakura, making those words Kiritsugu told him when he was a child the only truth he had left.

Aaaand that's as close as I'm ever going to get to "which route is the best, lol."

lolwat. If anything, everything Kiritsugu said to Shirou was the biggest lie of all, meaning Shirou had NOTHING holding him together at the end. One has to wonder if his last few hours was all a suicide gambit.

His last hours actually were, but he choose for them to be that way.

But think not about the dream, but about the man that dreamed. It isn't fair for him to became the "hero" he turned himself into. That's the sole reason I understand and end up coping with Archer's desire to kill himself in order to be free from his fate.
Shirou is much better off living his life with the one he loves, IMO.

*sigh*
I was going to avoid this type of thing, but what the hell...
To me, UBW Shirou is the best, because even though he realizes that his ideal is an impossibility and comes face to face with the end result of his following said ideal, he still decides to continue with it because he wants to. In the end, he chose the path he wanted to despite everything telling him not to. I like people that do what they want to despite the bonds of common sense, because they simply believe in it.

I don't need a perfect happy ending to enjoy and like something, though. My favorite Tsukihime route/girl is Akiha, so, yeah. As long as the story is good and the writing is good, I'm not going to hold it against the story for not always ending well for EVERYONE. Especially since there are other routes I can always read.
